Dear Newly Natural Me: 4c Hair is Just Hair

Dear Newly Natural Me,

So, you’ve heard that 4C hair is the tightest, most difficult hair type for a natural to manage. Surprise! That’s what you’ve got. Also–surprise!–you have looser textures mixed in there too, but that’s a whole other story.

Now, I know you went natural intent on loving whatever grew out of your scalp, but what if it doesn’t love you back? I mean, some of what you heard about 4C hair has got you shook. Words like nappy, undefined, difficult, rough, and even that it just doesn’t grow. Like some unruly toddler. And are you gonna be stuck wearing afros all the time and “looking like the boys”?

Okay, first of all, you’re going to miss that cute, full shrinkage afro when your hair gets too long to pull it off. (That’s that #mixTexProblems.) Enjoy the 15 minute washdays while you can!

Secondly, and as the future you, I’m pleased to report your hair does in fact grow like all normal hair! At a reasonable rate, even. So stick with your best practices (moisture, hygiene, protection) because I’m really enjoying this hangtime now. Your 4C hair can slay the length retention game as well as any other hair type, but consistency is key. Be consistent and your hair will cooperate.

And I see you looking askance at some 4C styling results versus the 3s and As. Stop that. No, yours won’t look identically shiny and bouncy, but trust me, it will be poppin’. And when it’s poppin’, can’t nobody tell you nothin’. Twist-outs, braid-outs, pineapples, puffs, and protective styles. You can do them all. Stretched, straightened, curly, and back to kinky again. 4C hair is versatile.

You may need to take an extra step, or a little extra time to achieve your hair goals, but that’s okay. There will be some setbacks, but you’ll overcome them with patience, care, and an appreciation for what you are blessed with. No, seriously. That’s the main thing. For any and all hair. That Holy Grail product you think you need won’t substitute for you getting to understand and truly work with your tresses. The more you master your mane, the more you’ll enjoy the journey.

When you level-up, detangling sessions won’t take half a day. Knots and tangles will be minimized. Your 4C hair will be beautiful, especially to you.

Sincerely,

Future You
